As a result Toshiba are one of the highest ranking 'green' companies in the world as rated by Newsweek every year. Both in 2009 and 2010 Toshiba ranked 10th (out of 100 global companies).

Our achievements are not short lived

  • Our Nasu factory is built in one of Japans national parks, as far back as 1971 waste water from manufacturing was treated on site and sent through the Kio pond in reception before release
  • Toshiba Japan achieved ISO 14001 certification in March 1996. Now over 120 Toshiba sites world wide have 14001
  • Set 2050 Vision in 2000 Signed up to the UN Corporate Social Responsibility Charter 2005. CSR reports are available annually for the cooperation and medical divisions

And in the UK

  • Toshiba Medical UK achieved ISO14001 in 2008
  • Between 2007 and 2010 we have reduced the C02 emissions of the company car fleet by more than 15%
  • We have reduced energy usage of our Crawley Head Quarters by 22%
  • We have reduced paper usage of the organisation by 15% compared to 2007 usage
  • Our latest improvement is the introduction of LED lighting to our service and warehouse areas which has reduced the energy used to light this area by 70%
  • Our next target is to achieve zero waste to landfill

Current activities

Toshiba Medical Systems is endeavouring to provide Earth-friendly, patient-friendly medical systems. This fits with our corporate ‘made for life’ goal and we promote activities to improve the environment. The company is now working towards its ‘Fourth Voluntary Environmental Plan’, having set out the ‘First Voluntary Environmental Plan’ as early as 1993.

Toshiba Medical System’s ‘Fourth Voluntary Environmental Plan’ sets out short-term and long-term environmental milestones. Key activities in achieving these include:

  • Expanding resource recovery by creating a cycle of ‘making, using, returning and reusing’
  • Reducing the use of hazardous substances
  • Developing products that are both Earth-friendly and patient friendly (see below)
  • Monitoring energy invested and discharged over the entire lifecycle of the product
  • Actively reducing waste in manufacturing sites
  • Making efforts to preserve water through extensive water quality control
  • Reduction of CO2 emissions and other exhaust gases

Al of the above is guided by the overarching corporate Environmental Vision 2050

What is Environmental Vision 2050?
People leading fulfilling lives in harmony with the Earth-this is the ideal situation by mid century envisaged by Toshiba Group Environmental vision 2050. With this overarching vision we consider our mission, as a corporate citizen of the planet Earth, to be the creation of new, enriched value while minimising our impact on the environment. In practical terms this means:

  • Equivalent products in 2050 should use only 10% of the power of products from 2000
  • Reduce energy used by its business processes by 50% of its usage in 2000
